Exploring the wonders of the Dixie National Forest. When it’s 100 in Zion in the summer, this is where we go. Pine trees. Trout streams. Van living. Hoodoos. Lava flows. Free camping. I love working for the park service, but our National Forests are my favorite spots to recreate.

Controlled Burn. Cascade Falls. The “mouth” of the Virgin River. Utah.

The Virgin River is responsible for the creation of Zion Canyon. It is a short river, with an incredible gradient of around 70 feet per mile in the main canyon. Its source is Navajo Lake on Cedar Mountain. Owing to the limestone under the lake, many springs feed into the river, the main one at Cascade Falls with the drainage leading to Zion and West Temple on the horizon.

Jenn, Meet Sequoia. 2006.

Jenn, Meet Sequoia. 2006.

Pine Creek Jump. They are kneeling with hands clasped that we might act with restraint, that we might leave room for the life that is destined to come. To protect what is wild is to protect what is gentle. Perhaps the wilderness we fear is the pause between our own heartbeats, the silent space that says we live only by grace. Wilderness lives by this same grace. Wild mercy is in our hands.””

- Terry Tempest Williams, Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place

Only have about 15 or so physical copies of The Mend remaining....

Only have about 15 or so physical copies of The Mend remaining.
Nope, they don’t belong here. Not from the standpoint of the ecosystem, but it also just seems so unlikely. You hike miles in blazing sun to find a tiny rocky stream with occasional deep pools. And yet there they are, likely washed in from outside the park. Invasive? Yep. Beautiful? Absolutely. Catching a 16” acrobatic rainbow is quite a treat… and one likely to end the next time a major flash flood washes through.

Park Ranger Field Day.
Jenn and I went on a nice hike along a lovely desert steam inside the park today. We hiked from a trailhead that doesn’t get used much and didn’t see a soul, simply rambling along the creek past beautiful green pools and cascades in perfect weather.
